Austere Medic Course

(Two full 8 hour classes – 16 hours total)

More than just a “First Aid” course, Austere Medic concentrates on providing the vital information that a caregiver will MOST likely need to fully treat the patient. Rather than focus on CPR and preparing a victim for the arrival of the ambulance, Midwest Disaster Medical strives to provide the skills needed to help students help the victim heal on their own.

This course is two full 8 hour days in length, and is designed to provide an untrained individual with the skills, mindset and knowledge needed to provide some level of definitive medical care to an ill or injured person. The course focuses attention on doing the most care with the least equipment, for the most likely problems encountered.

Topics covered include:

  • Basic anatomy
  • Basic physiology
  • Assessing the victim
  • Fluid replacement
  • Wound care
  • Treating common diseases/conditions
  • Treating common injuries
  • Acquiring medications
  • Pre-disaster planning
  • Suggested aid bag contents

The Austere Medic course is approximately 20 hours in length and is split between lecture/multimedia learning and practical, hands-on student practice. Class size is kept small, to assure each student has full access to the instructor’s attention. Plentiful equipment allows each student to practice skills without wasteful “downtime.”

What Austere Medic is not:

Austere Medic will not replace competent, professional medical care.

It’s goal is not to train surgeons, physicians, nurses or even Emergency Medical Technicians in the 20 hours available. It will provide a basic set of skills and knowledge to care for common maladies found in a disaster.

Austere Medic does not cover Homeopathic or Naturopathic remedies.

Austere Medic does not cover dental emergencies.

Disclaimer:

Some skills taught in this course are for use only in the most dire of need. For their use inside a functioning United States of America, you could be prosecuted and/or sued for -at best- practicing medicine without a license, and at worst, involuntary manslaughter.
